Pipeline

How the Pipeline is built

The Pipeline joins public registers that each hold part of the picture. No single government source records a project’s state approval, federal approval, value, owner and builder together. Every fact on a project page links to the record it came from.

How projects are matched

A project often appears in several registers under slightly different names. Records are joined on a shared identifier where one exists, such as the EPBC number a NSW application cites. Otherwise they are joined on name and location together, and only when both agree closely. Generic names such as “Residential flat building” are never matched on name alone. When a match was made by name and location, the project page says so beside the source.

What each stage means

In planning
Assessment requirements issued or an EPBC referral lodged, or a funded government project not yet substantially under way.
In assessment
An application is lodged and being assessed, or the EPBC Act assessment is under way.
Approved
A determining authority has approved the project. Approval does not mean work has started.
Under construction
AEMO lists the project as committed or commissioning, a federal program lists it as under construction, or a state budget shows at least a tenth of its cost spent.
Operating
AEMO lists the project as in service.

What the Pipeline does not have yet

Contractors are not published in any open register at scale, so most projects show none yet. Values exist only where a public source states one. Coverage is deepest in NSW, where every State significant project is included. Elsewhere the Pipeline shows projects referred under the EPBC Act, federally funded transport and Queensland Government capital works. More state registers are being added.
